hey cyberland.
long time, no post i know. i'm still recuperating from the weekend. i know, it's already thursday, i should be over it. at least let me explain what it is that i'm coming off of.
over the weekend i tried a new gig with box 5 productions, an event photography company of sorts that follows the applause talent search circuit all over the eastern united states. applause talent search is a dance competition circuit. every weekend they have competitions in at least two or three cities. last weekend it was in winston-salem, nc; paramus, nj; and detroit, mi. i was in winston-salem.
if you've ever seen little miss sunshine or donnie darko (sparkle motion) then you'll have a pretty good idea of what my weekend was like. saturday was all girls 12 and under trying their best to look 18 and over while dancing stripper moves all the live long day. it was disturbing to say the least. my phone call to coury on saturday was simple: if we ever have a daughter, she will not take dance.
that was quickly overthrown by coury who's always dreamed of her future daughter taking tap, ballet and jazz. i amended said statement to our daughter will never dance like a stripper. we agreed.
so, like i said, i felt like a child molester all weekend while 8-year-old girls were shaking their imaginary breasts to 'yellow polka dot bikini' and bouncing their pre-pubescent butts to lyrics about gin and juice and liquor stores. and the parents are the worst part of this equation, yelling out things like "go girl," "shake it," and my favorite, "work it girl."
and parents are paying for their children to do this.
i suppose i'm no better because i'm taking the decent money that box 5 pays me to sit in a chair and shoot a few pictures of each butt bouncing routine.
where have my morals gone???

Well, you can throw me in the "no morals" boat. As I was scrolling down, reading your post, I was looking for pictures from the event at the bottom. I suppose I will be first mate on the "no morals" boat. Sorry about your traumatizing weekend, buddy.
It happens even on the country dance circuit. . .
The scariest part is the fact that it's really a reflection of our media (advertising, movies, etc.) today. Girls are pushed to be sexualized at a very young age.
Too bad I didn't save the paper this week that had a good article on fathers' role in counteracting those pressures.
Bottom line, it said that a father's role is to be sure that their daughters know they're ok just as they are and that they shouldn't change for anyone . . . so you can take that into your future parenthood!
. . .and definitely still allow the dance lessons (just pick good classes)!
i can still remember being a little girl, all dressed up in red lipstick and blue eyeshadow, and being absolutely mortified because i was supposed to shake my butt in front of a crowd of people... and that was when the moves and the music were much more innocent.
but as a person who took 10 years of dance, and now coaches a dance team, i know better than anybody that there's a fine line between appropriate and downright vulgar - and my child will stay on the right side of that line!!!
